Old Point Groove/New Orleans

I played down at the New Orleans Jazz Festival a while back at the Old Point Club.

It was Funky!

Really Funky!

The gig started at midnight but when we got there they told us it probably wouldn’t really start until 1 or 2am. It was a “late” crowd!!! My band at that time was Bill Bickford, guitar; Jerry Z., organ.

They hadn’t gotten there yet! Dog asleep on floor in lower right!

SO…. we did the sound check and started messing around with a few ideas. We came up with a song and called it the Old Point Groove. I wrote a chart later after we tried it a few times and got it down. And later for that. It’s in the School of Funk.

FAST FORWARD: I did a Funk Drum Lab in Santa Cruz, CA at the Kuumbwa Jazz Club a few weeks ago and we did that tune.

Here’s a video of the head and a little of the blowing so you can check it with the chart.

Eddie Mendenhall, organ; Ben Herod, sax; Zach Westfall, bass; yours truly, drums.

So there you are, start to finish and obstacles can end up being opportunities!
