Jim Payne : Funky Drummer

ONLINE LESSONS

Jim is now teaching online. He incorporates the experience gained from the R&B/Funk Online course he created and is teaching for Berklee College of Music.

Jim will asses the student's level and assign a set of exercises, grooves and songs using various materials (his books, DVDs and other materials which he will supply). Lessons will be tailored to the individual student and will take into account his/her experience and interests. Students send in the assignments weekly. Jim will watch, listen, critique and give feedback. He will then make a new assignment.

Lessons are given in one semester blocks (12 week/3 month) similar to college courses.

This online format is producing some excellent results.

- Peter Erskine

"Jim Payne is a well-respected teacher, author, clinician and performer in the drum community. He has a thorough knowledge of what it takes to become a professional musician and has had a great deal of success in training others to pursue this career. I wish him luck with his new drum school."

- John Riley
Percussion Faculty
Manhattan School of Music
NYU
The New School

"I’ve known brother Jim Payne for many years. He’s one of America’s funkiest drummers and a great teacher. Hanging out with Jim Payne is one of the finest things you can do for your career."

- Clyde Stubblefield – "The Funky Drummer," James Brown.

"Jim and I have had many opportunities to play together and I’ve always enjoyed them. His musicianship is fully realized - technically and artistically. His experiences playing with many jazz and R&B legends helped him build his deservedly esteemed reputation. He’s a committed educator. He’s been teaching for years and I’m always impressed with his genuine interest in education. His book “Give the Drummers Some” is a testimony to his hard work. He’s frighteningly well-read, inexplicably mellow, in possession of a great sense of humor and a good friend."

- John Scofield

"Jim Payne is a drummer and teacher you want to spend time with. He knows about playing the instrument, he knows the industry and the players in it and he also knows how to communicate that information to you. He possesses a vast amount of knowledge in many styles of music. He has written several highly-respected and excellent instruction books, including "Give The Drummers Some" and "Drumming With The Mambo King," which he co-authored with the late, great Tito Puente.

He also knows the recording side of the business through his work as a producer with Medeski, Martin and Wood, and with Headhunters' drummer, Mike Clark, on his 'The Funk Stops Here,' and 'Actual Proof.'

Don't pass up the opportunity to find out what he has to offer. I can't believe you wouldn’t be more than satisfied with the experience."

- Skip Hadden
Professor , Percussion Department
Berklee College of Music

"Jim Payne has authored two books that in my opinion are indispensible to any serious drummers’ library. In Give The Drummers Some and Tito Puente's Drumming With The Mambo King he has provided an incredible wealth of information about two of the most important drumming styles in music today - Funk and Afro-Cuban. And now comes the news that Jim is opening his own teaching studio in New York City! I say, save a spot for me! I know I will learn a lot when I go there."

- John Ramsay
Professor, Percussion Department
Berklee College of Music

ONLINE LESSONS INFO:

Online lessons will consist of:

  1. Assignments from my books/DVDs and other books/DVDs
  2. Other materials from my library: charts, exercises, etc.
  3. Songs and tracks without drums to learn and play
  4. Groove and feel studies

You will have to obtain the published materials yourself but I can help if you're in a part of the world where that's difficult.

I will supply the all the materials from my library.

After you complete each assignment you will send me videos of your performances of the exercises and song tracks. Videos do not have to be elaborate or fancy. Mac users can use the camera included in your laptop. PC users can use an inexpensive digital camera.  You will have to record yourself playing on top of songs and tracks without drums using iMovie or another video software program.

Each set of lessons will cover a 12 week or 3 month period and paid for in advance. Assignments must be submitted in a timely manner.

This is a commitment as I'm sure you know. You will have to put in the time in the practice room, and I will put in the time analyzing, commenting and preparing the lessons. Hopefully we will both have fun and witness substantial progress in your drumming.

If you're interested, let's get started!

    - Bernard "Pretty" Purdie

"Jim Payne's 'Funk Drummin' takes you from the very roots of Rock and Rhythm 'n' Blues drumming to the highly complex, multi-directional Funk styles of today. He also details certain subtleties heretofore only a seasoned veteran would understand.

I highly recommend this book - a tremendous assist for the drummer with a seeking spirit."

    - Mike Clark

"Jim Payne's 'Funk Drumming' is unique. He has very accurately documented 'what is hip' in Rock 'n' Roll drumming today. His book is a valid representation of what people want to hear from a drummer in a working situation – live or in the studio."
