About the workshop:

Our goal is to provide an opportunity beyond the classroom and the private lesson for the developing jazz player to learn to function well in a performance setting. During their studies, aspiring musicians too often lack the chance to try out the material they are working on in a playing environment.

It is our belief that without this opportunity, improvisational skills will be limited to an academic approach. A jazz player needs to react to musical events in real-time. In order to do this, certain practical musical instincts must be developed.

Equipment:

We will provide bass and guitar amplifiers, a drumset and a piano. We have secured a large, comfortable space for the workshop.

Study Materials and requirements:

Before the first session, participants will be provided with the music for a varied selection of tunes from the standard jazz repertoire which will be the music played during the workshop.

A basic competency on the instrument and at least two years of study are required.

Skills addressed:

Developing the ability to maintain the form of the tune during the improvisations

Following the harmonic movement of the tune

Maintaining a strong rhythmic feel (swing/groove) in performance

Playing the melody with good phrasing and blending with the other players

Developing the ability to accompany the soloist, both for rhythm section instruments (i.e. piano, guitar, bass and drums) and horn sections

Finding ways to arrange a tune that will give it its own character and will capture the particular musical voices of the players

Plus:

In addition, participants will also learn how to:

Play fours

Improvise riffs

Play in small ensembles

Create intros and endings

Play with proper dynamics

We expect to develop a friendly group spirit as we will be playing together regularly.

As music making should be joyous and rejuvenating, our sessions will be non-competitive, productive and accessible to all students.
